Miscarriages, Infertility & Birth Trauma

Experiences surrounding pregnancy and childbirth do not always unfold as expected. Miscarriage, infertility and birth trauma can leave lasting emotional imprints, often accompanied by grief, confusion and a sense of isolation. These experiences are deeply personal, yet they also are shaped by cultural silence and unrealistic expectations around pregnancy and parenthood.

Miscarriage frequently carries layers of shame, self-blame and profound loss. Many women question whether they did something wrong or feel guilt for having shared hopeful news with others. Because society often minimizes losses that occur early or out of public view, parents may not be given the space or permission to grieve a baby who was never born alive. Fear about trying to conceive again is common, as the body and mind remember the loss.

Birth trauma can occur when a carefully considered birth plan suddenly shifts. Emergency interventions, unexpected cesarean deliveries or a baby’s stay in the neonatal intensive care unit can leave parents feeling powerless and unheard. When decisions must be made quickly, some individuals experience a loss of autonomy or feel they did not have a voice in what was happening to their own bodies. These experiences can linger long after the physical recovery, shaping how parents remember the birth and relate to their bodies and care teams. The growing presence of doulas reflects a desire for advocacy and support during these vulnerable moments.

Infertility brings its own emotional and relational challenges. Treatments such as IVF and IUI often involve significant financial strain and repeated cycles of hope and disappointment. Partners may find themselves on different pages about next steps, timelines or how much to invest emotionally and financially in uncertain outcomes. Even alternative paths such as surrogacy, adoption and foster care can feel overwhelming as families navigate complex decisions and feelings.
