Anxiety & Overwhelm

Anxiety and overwhelm can take many forms, from racing thoughts and sleepless nights to persistent unease and the inability to live in the moment. When anxiety is running the show, it can feel all-consuming, directing attention to worst-case scenarios and “downward spiraling.”

Anxiety is often fueled by distorted or inaccurate beliefs that magnify perceived threats. Panic attacks, which often accompany anxiety, can intensify this experience as the brain mistakenly activates the “fight-or-flight” response, even when no danger exists. This can lead to distressing physical symptoms like a rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, sweating or trembling. Over time, the fear of another panic episode may cause people to avoid certain places, situations or even responsibilities, making their world feel smaller.

Many clients experience anxiety in terms of constant planning and “what if” thinking patterns to control an uncertain future. While planning can feel helpful in the moment, it often feeds the cycle of anxiety. Through evidence-based therapeutic approaches, we help clients:

  • Identify triggers

  • Challenge anxious beliefs

  • Develop healthier ways to relate to uncertainty

At Mountain Laurel Therapy, we approach anxiety with curiosity rather than judgment. Anxiety is understood as one part of you, not your entire being. Even though the manifestations of anxiety feel exhausting and counterproductive, they offer valuable insights into the presence of cognitive distortions or inaccurate beliefs that magnify negative thinking patterns. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that anxiety does not have to dictate your existence. Together, we’ll work to understand what anxiety is signaling and how your mind operates to help you feel safe.

Therapy provides tools to reduce the intensity of anxious thoughts, shift internal dialogue and restore a sense of steadiness. With practice and support, it becomes possible to loosen anxiety’s grip, expand your comfort zone and comfortably reengage in the present.

You don’t have to manage anxiety alone. We offer a nonjudgemental space to explore what’s driving your sense of overwhelm and learn strategies that support calmness, clarity and confidence. Take the first step by scheduling an appointment today.
